In his era, you only left the field if you were missing a limb. As the proud captain of the South Sydney Rugby League Football Club, leaving the field simply wasn't an option.

Such a shame most young people only know Mario from that cringeworthy fatty vautin show.

I grew up watching him and his side of battlers through the 80's and boy was Mario tough and incredibly loyal to the club & supporters through those cash strapped times. The other thing about him is he spends so much time talking with fans, signing jerseys, having photos taken etc etc never rushes any one he's a true gentleman.

Mario even made it onto a top-rated American TV show, when he took Anthony Bourdain to a Roosters/Rabbitohs match.

Mario Fenech "Test Match" as he was known in his playing days was a great player that gave it his all.

He was the fall guy on the Footy show long before any health issues arose.

I hope his health does not get any worse.

I was lucky enough to meet him at the Fox Studios site many years ago when I lived in Sydney for awhile.

He was funny and easy going, a really good bloke.

Good luck Mario.

Talent is secondary to whether players are confident.
