Jai Field to Wigan

Recommended Posts

With a lot of signings you just have to wait and see. It's not like every big name signing who comes from the NRL to Super League pays off. Likewise, there are plenty of examples of players who didn't do much in the NRL coming over to Super League and making an impact.

Blake Green was one of the best halves Wigan have had in the last 20 years but he wasn't exactly ripping it up in the NRL before he joined Hull KR. He'd got games under his belt but was often used off the bench as a hooker, in the pack, at centre. When he played at stand off, whether at Cronulla or Canterbury, he was pretty much always on the losing side.

Michael Dobson was outstanding for Catalans and Wigan in 2006, was pretty good for Hull KR from 2008 onwards but he'd never even played an NRL game when he made his Super League debut and when he returned to the NRL with Canberra and again with Newcastle he was nowhere near good enough.

Josh Drinkwater played 4 games for St George before joining London where he impressed. Went back to the NRL but only managed 1 game for Wests before joining Leigh and having a good season in Super League and playing well for Catalans.

It's a case of wait and see. There's no point pretending that our standards are as high as the NRL. If there's someone who could potentially be a decent player in Super League then it's worth a go.

I prefer these type of NRL signings instead of big money, over the hill, 30 something year old players.

Those players who are 'squad' players in the NRL that aren't good enough to start in a full strength, match day 17 team (at the time they are signed).

Like a Luke Yates, Ligi Sau, Teveta Satae, Rhys Martin, Ben Murdoch Mesilla  David Fafita, Kelepi Tanginoa etc.

Much prefer these type of signings than forking out twice or three times the salary for a Shaun Kenny Dowell etc.
