Halifax captain Scott Murrell insists that his side will not be underestimating Hull Dockers ahead of their Tetley’s Challenge Cup tie at the KC Lightstream Stadium on Sunday March 16 (2.00pm).
The Championship side might be favourites to progress to the next round but utility player Murrell expects a tough test, pointing to Hull’s impressive results in the opening rounds where they scored 118 points in two matches.
“They have done extremely well to get through their opening rounds so we are not taking them light-heartedly,” said Murrell.
“We are pretty confident heading into the tie, but we know just how much they will be up for the match and we need to be prepared for that. Our approach is the same as any other game so we will watch videos and assess the strategy we will deploy.
“It has been a good start to the season for us and coming through a gruelling encounter with Sheffield Eagles in the league will give us a lot of encouragement.
Former Hull Kingston Rovers player Murrell joined Halifax before the start of last season and has flourished after being named as the club’s captain.
“It is hard to avoid the cliché, but being made captain of the side is honestly a dream come true.
“I have a really good relationship with our coach Karl Harrison and we speak frequently, which is handy from a personal point of view.
“The added responsibility is a massive honour and hopefully I am an approachable point of contact between the players and Karl.
“With the game being played at the KC Lightstream Stadium I am very excited to go back and see some familiar faces at the ground.
“That being said winning the match is our sole focus at the moment and the whole team will do everything we can to make sure that we are right side of the result come the final whistle.”
Hull Dockers coach Chris Kay knows that his team face one of the most dangerous sides outside of the top division, but says his players will enjoy the experience.
“In reality we are about to face, in my mind, the best team outside of the top division,” said Kay.
“Our main priority will be to ensure that we do the supporters justice out there by performing to the best of our ability.
“Getting to this stage of such a historic competition is fantastic for the club and the publicity that we have been receiving in and around Hull has put a real spotlight on the team.
“Seeing young people using social media to get involved with our cup run has been a true highlight and is unprecedented for us. That is why it is important that we make the most of the situation.”
