‘We’ve given ourselves half a chance’ says England captain George Williams

GEORGE WILLIAMS insists that the mood in the England camp had remained positive ahead of their 82-0 victory over France – despite their World Cup semi-final hopes being in the balance.

Brian McDermott’s side needed a big result following their defeat to Tonga seven days prior, and will still need the dominoes to fall their way next weekend if they are to progress.

Williams was among the scorers against France, with both Herbie Farnworth and Dom Young completing hat-tricks in the fixture.

Discussing the feeling in the squad, the England captain said: “It’s been really good. There were so many positives from last week to build on.

“It’s always difficult coming into a game knowing you need to post so many points, but the most pleasing thing was zero – that was massive.

“We were the best we could be, and that’s all you can ask for in the situation we’re in. We managed it really well and have given ourselves half a chance.”
