John Cartwright sees encouraging signs in Catalans Dragons victory

JOHN CARTWRIGHT likes what he is seeing from Catalans Dragons’ attack – and now wants a strong defence to match.

Catalans enjoyed a 34-28 victory over Castleford Tigers, a second win in three games as head coach for Cartwright, to move within four points of the play-offs.

“I don’t think we’ll have an issue scoring points,” said Cartwright. “I really like what I see from Doddy (Lewis Dodd).

“I’ve only been here a limited time so I’m still getting to know the players and their attributes and habits, but I think our spine can compete with anyone and we’ll score points but it’s the other side of the game that we’ve got to tighten up.

“It’s a hard one, I was sat up in an air conditioned box and you forget about the conditions and how hot it is out there.

“I spoke to a few players and they said the heat was really oppressive so I put those lapses in defence later in the game down to the heat because we came up with some plays there that you don’t want to see in your team.

“We’ll focus on the positives. I thought the halves got us round the park really well early. They controlled the game and we looked dangerous but the last 20 minutes there were some soft tries that you don’t like to see.”
