KYLE FELDT has admitted that he didn’t like the “direction” St Helens were going in after leaving with half a season still left on his contract.

Feldt scored 29 tries in 33 appearances for the Merseyside club but left last month to return home to North Queensland, where he is trying his hand at Aussie rules with Thuringowa Bulldogs, who play in the amateur, regional AFL Townsville competition.

The 34-year-old, speaking on radio show Triple M, revealed that he left Saints early due to Paul Rowley, who replaced Paul Wellens as their head coach last October.

“I enjoyed twelve months of it and then a new coach came in and things started to change in a direction that I didn’t really like,” Feldt said.

“Instead of trying to see it out and go with things that I didn’t really agree with, I thought ‘why not just leave on my own terms?’

“The club kind of agreed, so now we’re back in Townsville.”

Feldt went further in a different interview, saying that the UK didn’t live up to expectations more generally.

“It was cold, dark, wet, annoying but it was work,” Feldt told the Townsville Bulletin.

“When I left here my expectations were a lot higher than the reality, I guess, and I think that’s why I ended up leaving a little bit earlier than my contract.”
