Lam happy to welcome Greenwood back

Wigan coach Adrian Lam says Joe Greenwood will be given an opportunity to return to the Warriors fold once the season resumes.

The backrower has found himself drop down the pecking order under Lam and hasn’t played a single game this season.

Instead, he was loaned to Leeds Rhinos back in February but didn’t make a single a single appearance for the club with the lockdown cutting his spell short.

It’s been a difficult period for the former St Helens and Gold Coast forward, who has lost his place in the England setup and his spot in the Wigan side.

But Lam says he will get the opportunity to earn that place back once the season returns.

“Joe is one of our more experienced players and we need him playing every week,” Lam said.

“He’s an important part of our team and squad. He wasn’t playing and we decided to get him some game time at Leeds. That didn’t work out, but when we get back our squad will need depth, experience and talent. Getting Joe back will help us and he will get that opportunity to stamp his authority and stamp his place down in the team.

“He’s important to our club and our team, he just needs to get back to his best.

“All of our players will get that same opportunity.”
Meanwhile, Lam says the club will continue to communicate with their off-contract players during the uncertain times

“We have to protect our future, ” Lam says.

“But we have players off-contract, maybe six or seven, and they’re a senior crop.

“It’s going to be difficult but we’ll deal with it as best we can. The key is communication.”
