Larne Patrick: I’m itching to get going with Wigan

Wigan loanee Larne Patrick says he is “itching” to get started with his new club after completing his first week of training with the Warriors.

The Huddersfield forward turned down an optional extra week off to settle into his new surroundings.

“Some of the lads are here after having a four week break, personally I’ve had six weeks off so I don’t feel like I should have an optional week really,” he said.

“Being new I just wanted to turn up and every day and get to know the lads and coaches well really.

“It’s been a really good first week, it’s been great to get to know some of the lads and learn some of the skills that they do. I’ve had a good rest, my mind is refreshed and now I’m just itching to get going and get ready for the new season.”

The 26-year-old’s main aim is to try cement a place in coach Shaun Wane’s first team plans, but he also admits he is keen to win some silverware with the Cherry and Whites.

“Obviously Shaun Wane wants to win something, we all want to win something,” he said.

“On a personal level my focus is just to get into that 17-man squad and make my presence felt there. We do have a world class team here I think winning finals just comes off the back of that.

“It’s a very strong pack, it’s pointless being in a team where you feel comfortable though. You’ve got to push yourself and as a professional you want to do that. Where better to do that than here where we are all pushing ourselves to be better players. I’m looking forward to the challenge as I’m sure everyone else is, it’s going to be all guns blazing this pre-season I’m sure.

“I’m looking forward to it, everyone knows pre-season is tough and a Wigan Warriors’ pre-season is tougher than the rest but that’s what you want, you want to challenge yourself and make yourself the best you can be. It’s got to be tough to make you better but that’s what we want.”
