Widnes Vikings are closing in on the signing of Leigh centre Tom Armstrong, TotalRL understands.
Former Saints star Armstrong, 26, has scored eight tries in 15 appearances for the high-flying Centurions this year and helped mathematically secure their place in the top four with victory over London Broncos last week.
He started his career at St Helens, but, despite being named in the club’s 19-man squad for the 2011 Grand Final, decided to quit full-time Rugby League so he could return to university.
He subsequently joined Swinton before moving to Sheffield for the 2013 season as the Eagles won the Championship Grand Final.
His performances attracted the attention of the Centurions, who snapped up the centre who had been on a dual-contract with the club in 2011. Since then he has gone on to make 72 appearances for the club, scoring 45 tries.
The Vikings have yet to announce any signings for the 2017 season, with activity expected to be kept to a minimum following numerous players signing new contracts with the club throughout the year.
