Leigh Leopards appoint joint head coaches to replace Kieron Purtill

LEIGH LEOPARDS finally have their man, or men, to replace Kieron Purtill as head coach.

Nigel Johnson and Paul Arnison have been named as the duo charged with leading the Leopards in their second Super League campaign.

Johnson is no stranger to the women’s game having led Leigh Miners between 2018-23, as well as previously coaching at Thatto Heath, Warrington, Northwest Ladies and England A.

He also had a spell as assistant coach with the England senior team and is current UK Armed Forces Ladies head coach.

On top of this he has also coached at scholarship and academy level in the men’s game during his career.

His co-head coach Arnison has spent the past 24 years at the Crosfields community club, coaching the junior age groups, and finished last season with the under-16s who saw nine boys signed to professional academies.

He too has coached at many levels across both the women’s and men’s game throughout his career, and club CEO Neil Jukes is satisfied that the duo are the best men for the job.

“I’m delighted to have two coaches like Nigel and Paul joining our coaching system for the women’s team for 2026 and beyond,” said Jukes.

“We had many applicants, but it was important we waited until we got the right person (or in this case persons) which I believe we have.

“They come with huge experience and background in pathway, coaching and developing girls and women, not just within the community game and the borough of Leigh, but at international level.

“Their passion and enthusiasm to enhance the work done previously was evident. I know they both can’t wait to get stuck into the task ahead.”
