Lock Lane set up Hull KR clash with Challenge Cup triumph

LOCK LANE have secured a dream Challenge Cup third-round tie against holders Hull KR.

The Castleford-based side won 42-4 at fellow community outfit Brighouse Rangers in a rearranged first-round tie on Saturday.

And they progress straight to the third round because the winners of that fixture had been drawn to next face Featherstone Rovers, who were removed from the Challenge Cup when the RFL refused them membership a month after going into administration.

Lock Lane are set to play in the National League Premier Division this year, the highest tier of the grassroots game following a recent restructure.

While they have not faced top-flight opposition since a 37-9 first-round home defeat to Wigan in the 1973-74 competition, Lock Lane did notably play at professional neighbours Castleford Tigers (based around 400 meters across the River Aire from Lock Lane Sports Centre) in the 2007 third round, losing 88-10.

And they have twice knocked out professional clubs in the past decade, triumphing 37-22 at Oxford in the 2016 third round and 22-12 at Oldham in the 2022 second round when both were third-tier teams.

Like all Super League sides, the Robins have been drawn to play away from home in round three – although ties could be reversed if agreed between the clubs to maximise attendances and revenue.

It’s the only third-round fixture yet to be known with round two, involving Championship sides, being staged this weekend (January 24-25).
