Lomax could play for Saints this Friday despite broken nose

St Helens coach Keiron Cunningham has confirmed that fullback Jonny Lomax could be in line for a first senior appearance in over a year this weekend.

Lomax played for the Saints Reserves at the weekend and, despite picking up a facial injury in that game, he could be set to feature against Leeds on Friday night.

Cunningham confirmed that if Lomax is fit and ready to go, he’ll be available for selection – with the likelihood of him playing sure to become clearer on Wednesday when the Saints name their 19-man squad for the clash against the Rhinos.

“Jonny doesn’t come out with nothing, I think he’s broken his nose,” Cunningham said. “But he came through unscathed. We were watching with baited breath.

“We’ve got to be smart with Jonny’s body but, if everything is fine, then he plays. He’s a great player who adds a lot to the side.

“We’ve not trained him today so we’ll have look at him tomorrow and see how he goes.”

Cunningham also revealed that the Saints have begun to discuss an extension to the contract of half-back Luke Walsh, too.

Walsh is out of contract at the end of this season, but the Saints boss insists they are keen to keep him.

“We’ve spoken to his manager regarding staying at the club,” Cunningham added. “He’s a good player who does a lot for the team.”
