Luke Keary admits ’embarrassing’ year as a Catalans Dragons player and early-season ‘gaffe’

LUKE KEARY has admitted that the 2025 Super League season has been “embarrassing” on both a personal and collective level for himself and Catalans Dragons.

The French club have been one of the most disappointing teams in the top flight this season, finishing outside the top six play-offs as Steve McNamara lost his job earlier in the year.

With Joel Tomkins taking over as interim head coach and then as permanent boss, there has since been an upturn in form for the Catalans.

That was epitomised by the Dragons’ wins in the final two rounds against Leeds Rhinos and Hull FC.

After the first of those, he told Sky Sports: “Where’s that (performance) been all year?

“We know we’re not playing for anything but it’s great to see the boys turn up and it’s good for the boys here next year, as hopefully they can build on that.

“We just kept, just kept turning it up. We were offside every second tackle but we were just hanging in there. It was good to show a bit of heart.

“It’s been disappointing, it’s been embarrassing personally and as a team. We’ve been way off the mark this year and I don’t have any words for it but it’s great to see the boys rally a bit.”

Keary also reflected on the “gaffe” he made earlier in the year where he stated: “I’ll go on the record saying (the Super League) is in such a bad way, the game is horrendous over here. It’s the product, the coverage, the news around the game, there is zero. There is zero.”

As a result, the veteran half said: “Obviously, I had a bit of a gaffe earlier in the year and I learned a few lessons from that but I’ve really enjoyed the year.”
