Reed Mahoney’s second-half try was enough for Parramatta Eels to see off Canterbury Bulldogs 8-2 in the NRL season opener.
After a fast start by Parramatta, featuring a disallowed try for Blake Ferguson, Brandon Wakeham gave Canterbury the lead with a penalty.
Wakeham couldn’t extend that lead with a second penalty allowing the Eels to equalise through Mitchell Moses’ penalty.
The Bulldogs continued to have plenty of possession and territory into the second half before Mahoney broke the deadlock for the Eels with 14 minutes to go when he latched on to a grubber kick deflected into his path by Lachlan Lewis.
