Matt Peet sees more room for Wigan Warriors improvement

MATT PEET insists his Wigan Warriors side still has things to work on despite a number of remarkable performances with so many players out.

The Warriors enjoyed a 30-18 win over Warrington Wolves last Friday with the likes of Jai Field, Bevan French, Sam Walters and Junior Nsemba sat on the sidelines.

Instead of dipping into the loan market as so many other Super League sides have done, Peet chose to go with the younger players in his squad and fielded Taylor Kerr, Josh Cartwright, Kian McDermott and Shea O’Connor.

It’s fair to say that Wigan deserved the win, but Peet believes that improvements can still be made.

“There were elements of where we turned the ball over in areas and there were a few individual errors at the start,” said the head coach.

“We turned up and made some decisions towards the end of the game that kept the pressure on us.

“So it’s just about game management more than anything. We want the players to have the courage to play regardless of the scoreline really.

“But we lacked a bit of connection, there is some understanding around different personnel but we need to improve.”

Ahead of Wigan’s away clash against bottom-placed Huddersfield Giants on Friday, Peet is expecting a difficult challenge.

“They’ve always competed against us. I don’t know why but we seem to bring the best out of them,” he said.

“They’ve had some misfortune throughout the season with injuries but since Jim (Lenihan, Huddersfield head coach) has come in, he’s tried to put his own stamp on the team and he’s tried to ensure the fundamentals of the games are right.”
