McDermott backs McNamara to remain England coach

Leeds Rhinos coach, Brian McDermott believes that England coach, Steve McNamara should remain in the position beyond the end of this season.

McNamara is out of contract with England at the end of the coming season, but McDermott – who has just been appointed as head coach of the USA team alongside his role with Leeds – has backed the former Bradford coach for an extension on his existing deal.

“I think Steve is doing a good job.  I think the face of England rugby league is healthy. I think it looks more stable.  I don’t think there’s as much pinball with performances under Steve Mac; they’ve been reasonably consistent,” he said.

“Whether they can win in November is another debate, but I think the RFL should employ Steve beyond his contract, if he wants to do it.

“I think he’s been a good acquisition for England.   For Steve, it’s not just about putting a suit on, on game-day, he’s put a helluva lot of work in behind the scenes as well.”
