Paul Sculthorpe blames recruitment for St Helens’ problems

PAUL SCULTHORPE believes St Helens’ problems are down to one major area – recruitment.

Despite Saints sitting pretty inside the play-offs with a tilt at Old Trafford not impossible, there has been criticism levelled at the Merseysiders for the way in which they have failed to impress on the field in 2026.

Much has been made of new head coach Paul Rowley’s tinkering with his spine positions, not least the dilemma in choosing between Jack Welsby and Tristan Sailor, but Saints legend Sculthorpe believes recruitment has been the key let down in recent seasons.

“I’ve been critical of Saints this year and a lot of that is to do with recruitment and that’s come down to performances,” Sculthorpe told Sky Sports.

“Some of the players are not Saints standard players. We lost Morgan Knowles, though Jackson Hastings has stabilised performances and organisation.”
