Canberra Raiders gained their first win of the season, 26-20, over the Newcastle Knights in a thrilling game, aided by two tries by Jarrod Croker.
How it unfolded
First half: Jarrod Croker opens the scoring by pouncing on a sublime grubber from Jack Wighton in the 6th minute, Raiders lead 6-0; Knights hit back 10 minutes later through Akuila Uate, who took a lovely cut-put pass from Minto and went over in the corner, kick missed; Croker denied a second try by video referee, then Beau Scott goes over thanks to a gorgeous Michael Dobson pass that puts him in space 35m out, Gidley converts; Raiders hit back through Josh McCrone to lock the scores at 10-10 at half-time.
Second half: After a tense opening 10 minutes of the second half, Jarrod Croker grabs his second score thanks to a superb dummy-half break from Tony Milford, 16-10 to Canberra; James McManus equalises for the Knights after yet another video referee decision; Tyrone Roberts then gives Newcastle the lead with a classy individual effort that saw him go over in the left corner, kick missed; the Raiders cross again through Paul Vaughan and a Milford conversion gives Canberra a two point lead; Edrick Lee puts the result beyond doubt in the last minute with a final try in the corner; full-time: Raiders 26-20 Knights.
