THE end of dual-registration has finally been confirmed by the RFL, with one-week loans permitted from this season.
Players could be registered for two teams simultaneously under the previous system, established in 2013, with clubs in different divisions forging partnerships with each other.
This allowed fringe players in Super League to play for their club’s dual-registration partners in any given game, and could also be used by the lower-league side to field players for their bigger partner’s reserves team.
However, the RFL have opted to further relax registration rules in order to increase playing opportunities.
The previous two-week minimum length of loan – itself reduced from a month in 2021 – has been reduced to one, meaning players can now be loaned out for a single match.
Clubs are limited to fielding four loan players under such terms, while Super League sides cannot take players off their salary cap unless committed to a month-long loan – albeit, they still have a recall option.
The RFL hope the changes will see top-flight sides prioritise fielding their players in the reserves competition, which will begin on the weekend of February 21-22 but again not provide regular weekly fixtures.
