Rochdale Hornets sign ‘future star’ from community game

ROCHDALE HORNETS reckon they may have found a “star of the future” in new outside back Harry Sheridan.

The 20-year-old has joined from community side Rochdale Mayfield and has experience of playing for Wakefield Trinity’s reserves, but was sidelined for most of last year through injury.

Capable of playing across the three-quarters and at fullback, Sheridan will continue to play for Mayfield when not needed by Hornets, where he has signed a one-year contract.

Rochdale chairman Andy Mazey said: “He has impressed (head coach) Gary Thornton with his attitude, bravery and a willingness to learn.

“We believe he has a bright future, and it’s great to have talented young Rochdale players wanting to be part of what is going on at their hometown club.

“We have a clear plan to develop Harry which will include working in partnership with Rochdale Mayfield, to ensure he is match-fit and ready to take his opportunity when it comes.

“Harry can use the likes (first-team backs) Max Flanagan and Dan Nixon as motivation and good examples of being patient, working hard and taking your chances, and I’m excited to see him develop as a Hornets star of the future.”

Sheridan, who featured in a pre-season game against Goole Vikings, said: “I’m grateful to be joining this club, and I’m ready to get stuck in and test myself in the Championship this season when called upon.”

Rochdale have also brought in young Warrington Wolves forward Isaac Reid on loan.

Reid, another Mayfield product and a Scotland international, played five times for Hornets last season on similar terms.
