ST HELENS have issued an angry statement denying a suggestion coming from Wakefield Trinity that they had made an approach for their young star Harry Robertson.
Saints have denied that such an inquiry was made by Trinity and they have referred the matter to the RFL, effectively alleging unwarranted interference in their affairs.
Their statement says: “Contrary to public statements made by Wakefield Trinity in relation to Harry Robertson, a player contracted long-term to St Helens, the club has received no contact or communication whatsoever from Wakefield Trinity. Nor would we entertain any.
“We have reported this matter to The RFL’s Compliance Department for their review and, if merited, appropriate action should be taken.
“St Helens R.F.C. will make no further comment while this matter is under review.”
Following media reports of an approach, Wakefield coach Daryl Powell said on Thursday that a bid for Robertson had been rejected.
He said: “He’s a player we were interested in – who wouldn’t be? We made an offer and Saints declined it.
“We really like him, we think he’s a high-quality player.
“We’re looking for an outside back for next year and we’re still on the lookout. We’re keen on Harry but we’ll see what happens.”
