SAM BURGESS cut a disappointed figure as Warrington Wolves went down 23-10 in Saturday night’s Super League Grand Final to Wakefield Trinity.
The Wolves were second best throughout, and, despite mounting something of a second-half comeback, they couldn’t get over Trinity.
After the game, Burgess said: “It’s not the result we are after. The further you go, the deeper the wound and there are a lot of disappointed men.
“I’m very proud of the team, the club and the fans. It might be hard to see that right now but in a day or two we might be able to be more positive but it hurts now.
“We must pay huge congratulations to Wakefield. The stats in the first-half, they were level in terms of completion and errors but they physically just won the ruck and that was the difference between the two teams.
“They controlled the ruck on both sides of the ball and we were just surviving. You’ve got to pay the credit to the other team. They beat us.”
Burgess also explained what he said at half-time, with Warrington staring down the barrel of a gun at 19-0.
“We had to try and keep them together in the second-half. I’m not surprised that we showed spirit in the second-half.
“But, I didn’t expect the first-half to go that way. We needed to regroup and make sure we didn’t fracture.
“Wakefield have been extremely hot, it could have been an even tougher night.
“We wouldn’t have changed a thing as we were happy in the build up. We did our best but it was too far a gap to chase.”
