Sam Burgess still yet to sign contract but Warrington boss keen to ‘take the next step’

SAM BURGESS believes a heartbreaking Grand Final defeat is just the beginning for Warrington Wolves.

The Wolves proved no match for Wakefield Trinity at Old Trafford, losing 23-10 after trailing 19-0 at half-time.

Though Burgess revealed his pain, he was also pragmatic, explaining that his Warrington side have got to bridge a gap to the best teams – and that this isn’t the end for them.

“It’s more so the beginning. I think we understand what it takes to get here now – I certainly have,” said Burgess, who has also lost two Challenge Cup Finals in his three years as coach.

“To take the next step, we’ve got to keep improving and let the pain of today drive us home tomorrow.

“There are some great lessons for our younger players who have all learned something.

“It’s hard in this moment, I can’t hide the fact that it is painful to lose but we’re going to let the dust settle.

“The players have given everything, it’s been a great challenge and we’ve really come together in this time.

“It’s sad that the year is over but we will regroup with the staff and try to move forward.

“We’ve still got a way to catch up.”

Burgess, though not yet putting pen to paper, says will lead Warrington in 2027 after confirming a deal with owner Simon Moran.

“I will sign a contract with Warrington, I am staying here,” he insisted. “I truly believe in where we are going as a club and the identity we are creating.

“I’ve not signed one yet but I shook hands with Simon Moran on it and that’s worth more than any contract.”
