OLDHAM will be without experienced pair Josh Drinkwater (pictured) and Iain Thornley next season.

The duo are both leaving the Championship club after two years, with Australian halfback Drinkwater taking up anther opportunity, reportedly a role on the coaching staff at Hull FC, and outside back Thornley retiring after his struggle with knee issues.

Drinkwater, 34, joined from Warrington Wolves after previously playing for St George Illawarra Dragons, London Broncos, Wests Tigers, Leigh Leopards (then Centurions), Catalans Dragons (two spells) and Hull KR.

He has been influential in helping Oldham seal fourth, then third-placed Championship finishes.

“Josh has been a tremendous player for Oldham,” said coach Alan Kilshaw. “He has shown both his adaptability by playing in the Championship and his durability, the way he’s performed week in, week out.

“His experience has been invaluable to myself and the coaching staff. It’s like having a coach on the field.

“I’m sure whatever he does next he’ll be a success, and we wish him all the best.”

Ex-Wigan Super League Grand Final (2013) and Challenge Cup (2013 and 2022) winner Thornley, 35, helped Wakefield triumph in the 1895 Cup and Championship Grand Final in 2024, but has been restricted to ten Oldham outings by his injury problems.

He has also played for Hull KR, Catalans and Leigh (after Sale Sharks and Leeds Carnegie in rugby union), and said: “All good things must come to an end.

“I have some incredible memories from my short stint in rugby union and my career in Rugby League and gave everything when I wore the jersey.

“To all the clubs I represented, I thank you for allowing me to live my dream.”

Kilshaw said: “Iain has been the ultimate professional. He has been unlucky with injuries but has been a great leader off the field for us.”
