Sheffield Eagles retain front-row duo

SHEFFIELD EAGLES have rewarded hooker Corey Johnson’s consistency with a contract extension.

Both the former Leeds hooker and ex-Hull FC prop Masi Matongo have penned terms for 2027, ensuring further squad continuity.

There are 17 members of this year’s player pool currently under terms, with both Johnson, 25, and Matongo, 30, going into a third season at Sheffield.

Johnson has now made 50 appearances for the club, scoring six tries, since his switch from the Rhinos, where he came through the development ranks.

The Castleford Lock Lane junior product and England Academy player featured in 29 matches, sometimes in the halves, for Leeds, where he had two spells either side of a brief retirement from the professional game to pursue alternative career opportunities (he turned out at amateur level for the former Hunslet Club Parkside).

Johnson also spent time at Featherstone, York, Bradford and Halifax while with Leeds.

Zimbabwe-born, Hull-raised powerhouse Matongo was a relatively late Rugby League starter with Hull Wyke, with Hull FC signing him at 17.

He went on to make 58 appearances for the club, before spells at York (in 2022) and Bradford (2023).

Matongo sat out 2024 in order to get a nagging shoulder problem sorted out once and for all, then signed for the Eagles.

He has 40 Sheffield appearances to his name, 25 of them this year, with his first try for the club coming in the 44-20 win at Rochdale in March, one of 16 in 24 league games for a side who finished seventh and reached the second stage of the play-offs before Lingard’s departure.

“Masi is looking to build on his performances from this year,” said the club.
