Shenton not fooled by position of Wakefield ahead of Magic

Michael Shenton

Castleford Tigers captain Michael Shenton believes it’s “silly” where Wakefield Trinity Wildcats are in the table, and says that nobody at the club is underestimating them this weekend.

The Wildcats shocked Castleford on the opening day of the season earlier this year, but have only one once more in the league since that dramatic win against their bitter rivals.

And Shenton – who admits that the defeat still hurts him – is targeting revenge this weekend, but won’t be fooled by where Wakefield are in the table, describing them as a “strong team”.

He said: “It’s stung for a long time. It’s not a great way to get your season going, and I think it set a little bit of a precedent for how we started the season.

“When you look at that day and how strong Wakefield came back at us, they were on fire. We couldn’t handle them even though we were so commanding, and we know they’ve got that in them.

“They’ve got that much quality that I think it’s pretty silly they are where they are in the league. People will say they’re the underdogs but I think they’re a really strong team with some top talent.

“We were hit by them, so we’ve got first hand experience of what can happen against Wakefield. I’m not saying we didn’t prepare well for that game – because we did – but we’ve got a big challenge on our hands here. It’s important we put a good performance in this weekend.”
