Smith set for season-long layoff

Huddersfield Giants have received further injury woe, with Daniel Smith set to miss the rest of the season.

The 22-year-old forward has been struggling with a foot injury and has been forced to undergo surgery to resolve the issue.

“He had surgery on Friday on a foot injury that’s very similar to Kyle Wood’s injury,” said Anderson.

“Unfortunately he’ll be out for around six months – it could well be his season done and dusted.

“He’s facing two weeks in the house with his foot stuck up in the air, but we’ll rally round him and he’ll come back stronger. It’s the first big injury he’s had and he’s still really young.”

It is the latest blow for the Giants, who have had their squad depleted by injuries throughout the season.

Fortunately for the Giants, Eorl Crabtree, Kyle Wood and Joe Wardle all came through their returns unscathed in victories over Hull KR.

“The number one thing about these guys returning is that they’re back and they’re healthy – we’ve not lost anyone else too, which is a positive.

“Those three guys returning from injury and Jordan Tansey debuting and having an impact was good; he’ll only get better when he understands our structures.

“We’ve got to give our medical people credit. Joe Wardle is a couple of weeks ahead of schedule and I’m really glad he’s back out there. I can’t speak highly enough of them as a group.”
