FIRST-TEAM stars from St Helens and Wigan Warriors helped bring festive cheer to fans who are supported by Community Integrated Care.
The leading social care charity aids thousands of people who have learning disabilities, are autistic or have mental health challenges.
Saints forwards Matt Whitley, Noah Stephens and Jake Wingfield, as well as new first-team member Billy Keeley, made surprise visits to Community Integrated Care’s supported living sites in the town last Wednesday.
Wigan trio Tiaki Chan, Sam Eseh and Nathan Lowe did likewise at Hyndelle Lodge in Hindley on Friday.
Widnes mascot Kemik the Viking also visited four sites on Thursday night.
Organised with the support of the various clubs’ Foundations, players spent time with the residents, signed autographs, posed for pictures, chatted about sporting memorabilia and answered questions as fans quizzed them.
Whitley said: “It’s really good to get out into the community but especially at Christmas time.
“I was honoured this year when Community Integrated Care invited me and Billy down to come and spend a little bit of time with the residents and to be able to listen to some of the stories they shared about their lives and the memories they have of the town.
“Me and Billy are really grateful for the opportunity to be invited down – and it’s something we look forward to doing again in the near future.”
Community Integrated Care director of partnerships and communities John Hughes said: “We would like to thank the Foundation and the players for sharing their time at this special period.
“It was a dream come true for many people we support, who love rugby league and the Wigan, St Helens and Widnes clubs.
“The visits created lasting memories and have set people up for an unforgettable Christmas.”
