Stone wants Jamie Ellis to get fitter

Huddersfield Giants head coach Rick Stone has told Jamie Ellis he has to get fitter after being sent out on loan to Hull Kingston Rovers.

The halfback left the Giants earlier this month to link up with the Championship side on a year-long loan.

Stone was quick to stress that Ellis’ departure doesn’t signal the end of his Giants career, but wants to see him improve aspects of his game, including his fitness.

“I think first of all he needs to get a bit fitter, which I challenged him on a little bit,” Stone said.

“A little bit more composure and tougher in defence, and just believing in himself. He’s a good footy player is Jamie, he just needs to believe in himself a little bit more. Maybe he was a little bit comfortable in his position here and needs to be challenged more. I’m sure he will with where is going.

“Me and Jamie had a good chat about a number of things and there are a couple of things I’d like to see him improve at. But jeez, he’s going to team up with the ex-Australia coach (Tim Sheens) and he’s as an experienced coach as any in the game at the moment and he’ll do a good job.

“We have a few players over in that position when you realise that we have Gaskell that can go in the halves.

“Brierley is there, and Brough as well. If we are going to bring someone in we had to make a bit of space somewhere.”
