SOUTHERN advocate Alex Walker believes Super League will be better with London Broncos.
The resurgent capital club has already lifted the Championship Leaders’ Shield and 1895 Cup, the latter with a 32-10 win over Widnes in the final at Warrington last Monday, and now they have their sights set firmly on second-tier Grand Final glory.
High-profile Australian backers Darren Lockyer and Grant Wechsel have made no secret of their desire to get the Broncos back into the top-flight – and establish them as a regular contender for honours – but there is no guaranteed promotion place.
Walker, the 31-year-old fullback from Essex who came through the club’s old Academy system to make his first-team debut in Super League in 2014, and also played for them in the highest section in 2019 and 2024, insists the presence of London in the elite competition would make complete sense.
“It’s an exciting pathway we’re on and hopefully it only gets better for the fans and the players,” he explained.
“The club being back in Super League is ultimately what we want, what the country needs and what Super League needs, to have a strong London performing week in, week out.
“We’ve shown what we can do in the Championship this year and I’m sure all of the players are keen to get up into Super League and show what we could do there.”
Harlow-born Walker has racked up more than 200 appearances across his two spells for the Broncos, although they have been more limited this year.
Nevertheless, he is relishing any opportunity he gets and is eager to help the play-off push after being part of their historic 1895 Cup success.
“It’s different for me, being in and out of the team and being part-time in a full-time squad,” he added.
“It’s challenging, but I just want to add to the team and use my experience as much as I can every time I play.
“Every time I put the shirt on, I want to do my best and make the club better and the team better in any way I can.”
“It’s two (trophies) down, and we’ve got one more we want to go and achieve.”
Their play-off quest begins on Sunday at home to Doncaster.
