Widnes Vikings purchased a full-page advertisement in this week’s League Express newspaper to apologise to Castleford Tigers for their fans’ involvement in a disgraceful pitch invasion following their semi-final defeat to the West Yorkshire club.
The page read: “Congratulations, Castleford Tigers.
“Widnes Vikings would like to take this opportunity to apologise to each and every person or organisation with a passion for Castleford Tigers Rugby League club.
“The appalling actions of a number of individuals not worthy of being referred to as ‘supporters’ was inexcusable and cast a shadow ore your club’s first Wembley appearance in 22 years.
“Everyone at the Vikings wishes you luck for the final and hope you enjoy what is sure to be an exhilarating day.”
