HALIFAX PANTHERS have landed Wakefield Trinity halfback Myles Lawford on a season-long loan as he continues to work to get his career back on track after a knee reconstruction in mid-2024.
And the 22-year-old, whose dad Dean is a former Halifax scrum-half, is ready to make the most of the experience as the Panthers aim to build on making the Championship play-off semi-finals in Kyle Eastmond’s first season as coach.
It’s two years since Trinity signed Lawford on a contract to 2026 after he had come through the Bradford development system, represented Yorkshire and England at Academy level and impressed in the Bulls’ first team and during a spell on loan at Hunslet.
It was reported at the time that a string of Super League clubs had been after him, with Wakefield coach Daryl Powell saying: “Myles is a young halfback who has class written all over him.”
However as Wakefield dominated the Championship in 2024 then made last season’s Super League play-offs, opportunities have been hard to come by, with the injury also taking its effect.
Lawford has played five times for the Wakefield first team while also having temporary stints at Hunslet and Batley while featuring for Trinity’s Reserves.
Wakefield director of rugby Steve Mills explained: “A season-long loan to Halifax will give Myles some valuable gametime and allow him to grab hold of a team and become a main halfback.
“This is a vital step in Myles’ development and I’m very excited to see how his time with Kyle Eastmond goes.”
Lawford said: “It will be a competitive league week in, week out and I’m really looking forward to being involved in that challenge.
“I’m here to give 100 percent, learn from the experienced players, and play my part in helping the club reach their goals both on and off the field.
“I can’t wait to get started with the lads and crack on with what should be a successful season.”
