DARYL POWELL cut a frustrated figure following Wakefield Trinity’s 46-16 thrashing at the hands of St Helens.
Trinity trailed just 18-16 on the hour, but five late St Helens tries condemned Powell’s men to an unlikely defeat.
After the game, Powell said: “It was hugely disappointing and probably the last ten minutes was worst of all.
“It was almost a lack of effort and it was unforgivable really.
“We took a smack on the nose last week (against Leeds Rhinos) and we haven’t recovered this week.
“I don’t know how we lost that game last week.”
“Saints were desperate and they outplayed us today. I don’t think our fight was good enough.
“We need to fix it and turn it on its head.”
Powell also touched upon his side’s adversity through the game, with Josh Rourke suffering a knee injury in the opening ten minutes and then Isaiah Vagana dislocating his shoulder in the act of scoring.
“Losing Josh Rourke is a rattler because we didn’t have a back on the bench,” he explained.
“We normally have Jay Pitts who we can move around but then we lost a back-rower.
“But St Helens have had to deal with a much bigger problem.
“Tom Johnstone hurt his knee in the team run yesterday so we have had a poor couple of days with injury.”
