WALES WORLD CUP SQUAD 116 WELSH LEAGUE SELECT 10
IAN GOLDEN, Wrexham University, Saturday
THE Wales Wheelchair World Cup squad put their domestic opponents to the sword, but after an early scare.
Taking advantage of an error from kick-off, their opposition, selected from three domestic Welsh sides, took a shock lead, with Jess Booth scoring. Mason Baker’s conversion attempt hit the post.
But once the World Cup side got the ball, they were in front. An excellent team move culminated in Matthew Turner crossing and then converting.
Turner had completed a hat-trick of tries and goals by nine minutes, then scores from Sid Ramsey, John Berriman and Jodie Boyd-Ward, with Turner adding two more goals, put the score on to 34-4 on 20 minutes.
It’s to the Select side’s credit that the World Cup team scored just three times in the next quarter. Berriman added a second, and Fionn McCabe scored twice, with Mark Williams adding a brace of goals, to put the half-time score on to 50-4.
McCabe completed his hat-trick two minutes into the second half. Martin Turner added the goal.
And the scores kept coming. Martin Turner went over for three tries; Matthew Turner, Boyd-Ward and Sid Ramsey each got two more, with Lee Sargent and Berriman completing the scoring.
Matthew Turner kicked six more goals and Martin Turner two.
A Wyatt Jones try, which was converted by Tomos Parker, was the only second-half consolation for the Select.
