A NEW attendance record for an Ashes Test in England will be set at Wembley on Saturday.
Ticket sales for the eagerly-anticipated opener between England and Australia have surpassed the 57,034 who saw Great Britain’s 8-4 triumph over the Kangaroos in 1994 at the old Wembley.
The lower bowl of the stadium is entirely sold out for the match, which is the only Test of the series – a first Ashes renewal since 2003 – with tickets still available.
And Rugby League Commercial are hoping to push further sales in the final few days with visits to some London landmarks.
This (Wednesday) morning, the honour of ringing the bell to open the trading floor at the London Stock Exchange was given to two legends of the game, Martin Offiah and Gorden Tallis (pictured above with Dame Julia Hoggett, CEO of the Exchange).
And the captains and coaches of England and Australia are expected at Downing Street this evening for a photo opportunity.
RL Commercial managing director Rhodri Jones said: “We were delighted to be joined by the famous Rugby League Ashes trophy, and by Martin and Gorden, at the London Stock Exchange today for this special opportunity to celebrate the revival of the fierce rivalry after a 22-year absence.
“We feel privileged to be part of this unique ceremony and for a brief moment place rugby league at the beating heart of the UK’s economy.
“I am very thankful to the London Stock Exchange, Open Exchange and those who have made this possible.”
