WIDNES VIKINGS have signed Nathan Connell following the young back’s departure from Salford Red Devils.
Connell has been a regular for Salford in a year marred by the club’s financial issues, making 23 appearances to add to two the previous season.
The 22-year-old, who can play on the wing or at fullback, has signed a one-year deal with Widnes.
“I’m excited for a fresh start at the Vikings,” said Connell.
“I’m hoping to bring plenty of skill to the squad this year. I might not be the biggest, but I’ll always give 100 percent for the team, coaching staff, and fans.
“I ended up playing a lot more than I thought I would at Salford last year. It’s obviously a big step up playing in Super League.
“I know the Championship is a very physical competition, so having that Super League experience will definitely help me kick on this year.”
Connell is Widnes’ sixth signing for next season and second of the week, following Sam Wilde’s return from North Wales Crusaders for a third spell.
Back-rower Wilde previously played there between 2018 and 2020, then 2022-24 after a year at Newcastle Thunder, scoring 41 tries in 142 Vikings appearances.
Wilde said: “I’m buzzing to be back here. Everyone knows how I feel about this club.
“I’ve always enjoyed my rugby playing here, so when I got the opportunity to come back, I had to take it.”
