WIDNES VIKINGS coach Allan Coleman is “over the moon” to have signed Australian back Byron Johnson.
Johnson, 23, says he turned down an opportunity to trial with Brisbane Broncos next pre-season in order to join Widnes on a one-year contract with an option for 2028.
A fullback or centre, Johnson has been playing Queensland Cup rugby for Brisbane feeder club Souths Logan Magpies, scoring nine tries in 33 appearances in the second-tier competition.
Coleman has suggested his new signing could be a direct replacement for Bradford Bulls-bound Nathan Connell at fullback.
“We’re hoping that Byron is going to be exceptional for us,” he said.
“We’ve of course lost Nathan Connell, and it was vital that we replaced Nathan.
“He’s got a lot of speed, he’s powerful, strong, really hungry, and he has a massive future in the game.
“I just can’t wait to get him in Widnes colours.”
Johnson said: “Whilst an opportunity to trial with an NRL team for 2027 was available, after speaking to the Widnes recruitment team I see their vision, I’m so excited to represent a club in England with such huge potential.
“I’m looking forward to getting over to the UK, and helping Allan and the boys continue to improve and strengthen in 2027.”
Widnes came fifth in this year’s regular season, and after upsetting Oldham in round one of the play-offs, travel to Newcastle Thunder in a qualifying final this Saturday.
