Wigan departures open recruitment door

Wigan Warriors’ trimming of their squad is almost complete after Chris Hankinson joined London Broncos.

The centre has joined the Championship club on a season-long loan and follows several other Wigan players to depart ahead of the season.

Romain Navarrete is set to be the next out of the club as he links up with Hankinson at the Broncos.

Josh Woods and Jake Shorrocks have joined Championship club Newcastle Thunder, while Joe Greenwood has headed for Huddersfield and Joe Burgess and Jack Wells have joined Salford. Ben Flower has also departed for Leigh, while club great Sean O’Loughlin has retired.

Mitch Clark is another player who could yet depart, with the Warriors open to letting the forward join another club.

If so, the Warriors could enter the recruitment market in an attempt to bolster their squad ahead of the 2021 season.

Kris Radlinski, the club’s executive director, said of Hankinson’s departure: “At the end of the season, Chris came to me and said that at his age he needed to be playing regularly. With no reserve grade and the cancellation of dual-registration, we needed to explore other opportunities for Chris.

“A chance to be a starting player for London has arisen and we all feel that it is the right thing for Chris at this time.

“He will have a year in the capital and then return to Wigan in 2022. He will be a great addition to Danny Ward’s London Broncos team.”
