Wigan Warriors coach Shaun Wane has revealed that Matty Bowen may be given another rest this weekend, with Ryan Hampshire deputising for their game against Widnes on Friday night.
So when the Warriors name their squad for the clash, later today (Wednesday), Bowen may not be in it despite an impressive performance against Leeds last Thursday.
“Rocky (Ryan Hampshire) might start at fullback – I’ve not decided yet. I might give Matty Bowen a rest,” said Wane, admitting he has to look after his veteran fullback ahead of the run-in and the Super 8s.
“I think he has been very good but the plan was always to look after him. This is a tough game but we’ve got some tough games coming up too. Bowen is on the wrong side of 30 and I need to make sure I take care of him.”
Wane also revealed that the club are sweating on the fitness of two key players, Liam Farrell and Dan Sarginson.
“There’s a question mark on Liam Farrell, he said. He’s not trained today but he’ll train on the team run before the game. And Dan Sarginson has got a bit of a knock so I’m not sure if I’ll go with him. I might leave him out until Hull, the week after. Anthony Gelling will be the one who comes in for him if I make the change.”
