Wigan Warriors boss Shaun Wane has claimed his club and ambitious Salford Red Devils are in “different leagues” when it comes to the marquee player ruling, insisting his job is to bring through youth, as opposed to spending money.
Koukash is keen to bring in a ruling where clubs can have one player that is exempt from the salary cap, but he once again failed to secure the necessary votes earlier this week. And although Wane said he understands what Koukash’s aims are, Wigan are a club that are more focused on developing youngsters.
“What Marwan Koukash does is his business, what excites me is our bringing players through,” said Wane.
“Salford are in a different league to us because we have a lot of youngsters in the Wigan area that play rugby league. It’s my job to make sure we’re consistently bringing through better players in our youth academy.
“But I do understand what Marwan Koukash wants to do with the marquee player.”
