NOAH HODKINSON has scored 13 tries for Wigan in twelve Super League appearances this season.
And Hodkinson, 20, whose normal position is fullback, has scored eleven of them while playing on the wing in Wigan’s last nine games.
He was first selected in that position to replace the injured Liam Marshall in the Round 10 clash against Bradford Bulls on May 2nd, scoring a hat-trick of tries.
He was part of the team that won the Challenge Cup at Wembley last month and in the last two games he has scored four tries against Wakefield Trinity and three against York.
But despite his success as a stand-in winger, Hodkinson would ideally still like to turn out at fullback.
“I’m a fullback really and I’d never played on the wing until recently,” he admits, while recognising that he is unlikely to replace Jai Field in that position.
“The best thing I can do is to try to keep my current position, but Liam is a good winger and at the end of the day it’s up to Matty to decide who he wants to select.
“I prefer fullback because I’ve played it for longer, but I would play anywhere.
“As a fullback you get your hands on the ball more and you can attack both sides of the pitch but as a winger you get involved in different ways.
“I just want to try to get as many games as I can and play if I’m needed.”
Asked about Wigan’s current run of good form, Hodkinson has a simple explanation.
“We’ve just had a narrow focus on the game plan and keeping it simple and training hard. Matty and the coaching team make it very clear what they want from us.”
Meanwhile Wigan will take centre stage for the Magic Weekend, when their clash against St Helens at Everton’s Hill Dickinson Stadium will bring down the curtain on the second day and Hodkinson is looking forward to the experience.
“It’s always good to play somewhere you’ve never played before, especially at a football stadium that is pretty big and it always makes it better when you’re playing Saints.”
