Workington Town coach happy to land new Australian halfback

WORKINGTON TOWN have added to their Australian contingent by signing halfback Corey Herdegen from Queensland Cup side Ipswich Jets.

And new boss Brad Singleton (pictured) believes the former Sunshine Coast Falcons player will be a perfect fit for the Fibrus Community Stadium side.

Cumbria-born ex-Leeds Rhinos forward Singleton is starting his first coaching role in succession to Jonty Gorley.

His predecessor has become head of rugby, with the pair putting together a squad tasked with improving significantly on this year’s 18th-place finish.

Hooker or halfback Harry Fraser has been brought in after impressing for Tweed Heads Seagulls in the Queensland Under 20 competition and Northern Hawks in the Newcastle RL.

He and Herdegen will join Town’s existing Australians, fullback Zarrin Galea, winger Tanna Featherstone, centre Braden Leigh and forward Lucas Castle.

Herdegen, 25, is from Wollongong, 50 miles south of Sydney, but first made his mark with Brisbane’s Wynnum Manly Seagulls in the Queensland Under 20s.

“He’s a player we’ve looked at closely, coming highly recommended from people whose opinion I respect, and he is someone I believe will bring real quality to our squad,” explained Singleton.

“Corey has come through good systems over in Australia, playing alongside and against players pushing for opportunities in the NRL.

“To have someone with that experience coming into our group is pleasing, and a good step forward for the club.

“Corey is comfortable taking the ball to the line, he can create opportunities for the players around him and he isn’t afraid to challenge a defensive line himself.

“We want to move teams around, make them work defensively and have players who can recognise when opportunities present themselves. I believe Corey fits that perfectly.

“For him to commit and put trust in myself, the club and what we’re trying to build here means a lot.”
