YORK KNIGHTS expect Cameron McInnes to be a “culture-setter” after confirming the Australian forward’s addition from next season.
A veteran of almost 250 NRL games with South Sydney Rabbitohs, St George Illawarra Dragons and, for the past four years, Cronulla Sharks, McInnes has signed a three-year deal at York.
That’s despite the fact he’ll be 33 by the time the new season begins.
McInnes, who made one State of Origin appearance for New South Wales in 2024, is York’s first confirmed signing for 2027.
Confirmation comes days after businessman David Dickson reached an agreement to take over the club, with a view to consolidating the Knights in Super League following last autumn’s promotion.
“Cam’s a real statement signing for us,” said York coach Mark Applegarth.
“After chatting with Cam numerous times now, he’s going to be a real culture-setter for us.
“He’s got really high standards for himself and his teammates. He helps drive a certain standard within your environment. On top of that he’s an outstanding player and person as well.
“I think Cam’s going to be a real quality signing not only for York Knights but Super League as well.”
McInnes has been used as a loose-forward throughout his time with Cronulla, with whom he will hope to finish on a high in the NRL play-offs.
But for much of his career before that he featured at hooker, giving York an option in both positions.
“It has always been an ambition of mine to play in the Super League and experience a different competition,” said McInnes.
“To get the opportunity to do it in York, with a team just starting its journey, was hugely motivating.
“I can’t wait to meet my new teammates and rip in with them.”
