YORK KNIGHTS forward Paul Vaughan has announced he will retire at the end of this season.
The 35-year-old former Australia international has been an influential figure on York’s Super League debut, helping them surpass expectations with eight wins.
Vaughan signed a two-year deal when he joined last autumn, following three seasons with Warrington Wolves, but has decided to call time on his career early.
“Rugby league has been a huge part of my life for as long as I can remember,” said prop Vaughan, who made more than 200 NRL appearances for Canberra Raiders, St George Illawarra Dragons and Canterbury Bulldogs, along with making six appearances for New South Wales and being capped by Italy (six times) and the Kangaroos (twice).
“What started as a childhood dream became a career and a journey I could never have imagined, and I feel incredibly fortunate to have lived it.
“To York , thank you for giving me the opportunity to finish my career doing what I’ve loved since I was a kid.
“I wish the club, the boys and all the fans nothing but the best moving forward.
“I walk away from the game grateful, proud and with memories and friendships that will last a lifetime.”
It’s a blow for York coach Mark Applegarth, who has attempted to recover some of that experience by signing former England international and Man of Steel Zak Hardaker from Hull FC.
“I can’t speak highly enough of Paul,” said Applegarth.
“He chose to join us over a number of other offers to challenge himself and he’s certainly done that.
“He’s a man that leads by actions and I’ve really enjoyed coaching him and getting to know him and his family.
“We wish him and his family all the best in the next chapter and he will always be a Knight.”
