York Valkyrie sign Canadian ex-gymnast and dancer

YORK VALKYRIE have added a second Canadian international to their squad, with the arrival of Petra Woods.

Just a month after re-signing Megan Pakulis, who returned to the club after a season with Gold Coast Titans in the NRLW, fellow Canada Ravens star Woods has also moved to the Minster City in a bid to take her playing career to the next level.

The 30-year-old was selected for the 2017 World Cup but didn’t feature after picking up a knee injury in training.

However she did play in every group game of the 2022 tournament – scoring Canada’s only try in the 54-4 defeat to England.

Coming from a rugby union background, Woods is currently the Ravens’ top try-scorer and is involved in developing Rugby League in Canada.

With a background in rugby union, Woods was also a competitive gymnast and dancer.

“Sometimes the greatest opportunities take time, and I know that my signing with York Valkyrie is going to be extremely special,” said Woods.

“Since my first rugby league practice in Toronto, Canada, I’ve been soaking up all of the international tournaments, combines and of course watching the growth of the female sports leagues develop across the world.

“Moving to, and playing in, England is so remarkable for me because it’s where my father was born, where I enjoyed my first rugby tour (Mayfield Mavericks 2012) and where I played in my first World Cup game (Canada Ravens 2022).

“The Valkyrie team and staff have been so welcoming, and I know that this next step in my playing career is exactly where I am meant to be.”

Valkyrie have also handed a deal to former Leeds Rhinos Under 19s player Brooke Henderson.

The teenage winger or centre from Wallsend was part of the North East Centre of Excellence, and has also represented her county.

She has also been working as Development Officer for Newcastle Rugby Foundation, where former Valkyrie forward Zoe Hornby also worked.

“I’m extremely grateful to be given this opportunity and I’m excited to be apart of this amazing team and looking forward to the season ahead,” added Henderson.
