Zarrin Galea geared for Workington Town community work

WORKINGTON TOWN fullback Zarrin Galea is making his mark off the pitch as the club work to forge even stronger links with the local community.

The 25-year-old Malta international has been a hit on the field since swapping Australia for West Cumbria midway through 2024.

He notched seven tries in 15 Town games that campaign while last season’s figures of ten in 20 cemented him as a fans’ favourite as well as helping make him joint League One Player of the Year with halfback Lewis Else, then of Rochdale, now Midlands.

Galea, recommended to Workington by former player and Malta teammate Jarrod Sammut, was wanted by a string of rival clubs, but committed to Town to 2027.

His contract takes in work with the club’s community trust, a role enjoyed by the man from the New South Wales country town of Dubbo, who played for Redcliffe Dolphins and Wynnum Manly Seagulls in the Queensland Cup before heading to the UK.

As part of that, he is helping organise a series of ‘takeover days’ when junior players from local amateur clubs get the chance to enjoy a Workington match at the Fibrus Community Stadium at close quarters.

Cockermouth Titans will take up the opportunity when Town face Barrow on Sunday, June 7, then it’s the turn of Broughton Red Rose against Oldham on June 14 and Maryport when Hunslet visit on June 28.

Aspatria Hornets and Glasson Rangers are lined up for August, with other dates still available for any interested clubs.

Meanwhile the Championship clash with Rochdale on Sunday, August 16 will kick-off at 4pm as it’s preceded by Town Ladies’ Northern League One meeting with Hornets, starting at noon.

Northern League One is the third tier of the women’s game.
