STEVE McNAMARA sees green shoots of growth at Warrington – even if his exact role with the Wolves remains a mystery.
The former England coach was appointed to Warrington’s coaching team in October, five months after his eight-year reign at Catalans Dragons came to an end.
Having taken charge of 300 Super League games at Bradford and Catalans, and spent five years as national team coach, it was a surprise to see McNamara take a role working under Wolves team chief Sam Burgess.
Warrington are keen to not place a specific job title on McNamara, who is working alongside director of rugby Gary Chambers and assistant coach Richard Marshall.
His arrival followed the exit of Burgess’ other lieutenant Martin Gleeson, who has returned to rugby union with reigning Premiership champions Bath.
Speaking to the Warrington Guardian, McNamara said of his new role: “I’ve really enjoyed it, to be honest – it’s been refreshing.
“I came in with a clean slate looking at people, but you get perceptions as an opposition coach about players and clubs.
“That’s good information to have but you need to go in and judge as you find and see it.
“Lots of things have changed from last season and judging from what I’ve seen, the players’ application and desire to improve has been exceptional.”
Like most Super League clubs, the Wolves’ squad are now off for a Christmas break, but they will return in the New Year with a pre-season match against neighbours Widnes on Friday, January 9 at the Halliwell Jones Stadium.
That’s one of two pre-season games for Warrington, who also host Leigh Leopards on Friday, January 30.
