WARRINGTON WOLVES coach Sam Burgess was left dumbfounded after Sam Powell was sin-binned in his team’s 24-6 loss to Leigh Leopards.
Powell was yellow-carded in the second half for a hip-drop tackle on Tesi Niu at Hill Dickinson Stadium.
In Warrington’s previous game, Catalans’ Guillermo Aispuro-Bichet escaped a card for a controversial tackle on Arron Lindop.
“I wonder if the rules have changed in the week,” Burgess said when asked about the yellow card.
“I can’t comment on it. Last week it’s no sin bin, this week it’s a sin bin. Explain that one.”
Asked if he would contact the RFL this week for clarification, Burgess replied: “I won’t waste my time.”
Warrington went into Magic Weekend a busted side, but the coach refused to blame the defeat on injuries.
“I’m never relaxed,” he said. “I don’t like losing. The performance was off today. I’m not relaxed about that.”
Leigh coach Adrian Lam expects Powell to face a ban for the tackle.
“I don’t think Sammy’s that type of player,” he said. “But it didn’t look good.
“It’s out of our hands. I’m sure he’s going to face some sort of judiciary stuff.”
Lam described the victory as the best performance of Leigh’s season.
“Today was a must-win,” he said.
“Our preparation was really good this week, and it needed to be. We probably could have gone on with it a bit more. We’re two points closer to the (top) six.
“It was a tough performance in the second half, we were courageous how we hung in there.
“It was a great atmosphere, and we’re fortunate to be a part of it.”
Lam admitted he was surprised by the incident in the first half when Adam Cook was denied a conversion for failing to beat the shot clock.
“I know the rules, so it wasn’t a surprise,” he said.
“But what was frustrating was that no ball was given to him by the ball boy.”
