BRIAN MCDERMOTT has admitted he would like to lead England at the next Rugby League World Cup.
The 56-year-old signed a short-term deal to become England head coach following the exit of Shaun Wane earlier in the year.
That deal will see the former Leeds Rhinos guru lead his nation in this year’s World Cup, but there was no official announcement about what the future holds beyond that.
But he has confirmed that he would like to lead England into the 2030 World Cup – the host of which is yet to be announced.
“We’ve had very informal discussions about what that might look like (future beyond this World Cup),” explained McDermott, whose eight major trophies with Leeds Rhinos make him the most successful coach in Super League history.
“It’s been a very short conversation, but I would like to get another crack at the World Cup in four years’ time.
“If you’re going to do it properly then you’re going to need a four-year plan.
“You’ve got to be connected to a program because this has been a crazy period trying to cram all this in – although I do think we’re in great shape by the way.
“I would like a crack at the next World Cup but we haven’t gone deep into those discussions as things stand.”
