Anthony Murray pleased with Whitehaven hooker options

WHITEHAVEN coach Anthony Murray is pleased with his options in his old position of hooker.

Ellison Holgate and Josh Blinkhorn have both signed contract extensions to 2027 after impressing their boss after stepping up from the amateur game, having featured for England Community Lions, ahead of last season.

Holgate, 25, who was signed from Wath Brow Hornets amid interest from Workington, started 13 times, came off the bench in five other games, and contributed nine tries.

Blinkhorn, 19, joined from Millom, and made one start and seven appearances as a replacement, notching two tries. He also spent time at his former club on dual registration.

Both have benefitted from Murray’s widespread experience at nine (his clubs included hometown Leigh and Rochdale) as well as that of former Whitehaven favourite James Newton, who has become strength and conditioning coach after calling time on his playing career after sustaining a broken neck on the final day of the 2024 season.

Murray said: “After making the step up, Ellison has shown just how capable he is at this level. He had an outstanding debut season and really announced himself as a professional player.

“His attitude, work ethic and natural ability have all stood out, and it’s clear he has a very bright future ahead.

“There are no limits to how far he can go in the game, and we’re delighted he’s chosen to continue his journey with us.”

On Blinkhorn, he explained: “Josh got his first taste of professional rugby and never looked out of place.

“He handled the physicality of the professional game with real confidence and showed maturity well beyond his years.

“We’re excited we will see him continue to grow and develop in our colours.”
